Celebrating Gardens and Gardening June 15 – 23, 2019
For immediate release
Ottawa, Ontario, June 14, 2019: Ottawa Garden Days, the annual celebration of gardens and gardening begins on June 15th, National Garden Day!
Deputy Mayor Matthew Luloff officially proclaimed June 15 to 23 as Garden Days in Ottawa this morning at Chartwell Rockcliffe Retirement Residence. Members of Gardens Ottawa and the garden community were on hand to mark the occasion. Ottawa Garden Days invites you to celebrate your garden with family and friends, visit your favourite garden or discover a new one. For more info: www.gardeningcalendar.ca/garden-days
“With this year’s theme being Wellness & the Garden, I invite everyone to be active in their garden or visit one of the many beautiful gardens Ottawa offers including the Garden Promenade,” said Mary Reid, Master Gardener and Ottawa Garden Days spokesperson.
Gardens Ottawa took this opportunity to point out abundant research that promotes the physical and mental benefits of gardens and gardening. The highlight of the ceremony was the recognition by Deputy Mayor Luloff of this year’s “Ottawa Garden Stars”, all of whom are 90+ years old. Gardening and gardens have been part of their lives and still are. (Attached is a list of the Ottawa Garden Stars honoured.)
Garden Promenade organizers along with National Capital Commission’s Marc Corriveau, Director, Ontario Urban Lands and Greenbelt, announced that coinciding with Ottawa Garden Days is the return of the Capital’s unique garden experience, the Garden Promenade, connecting more than 75 public gardens in Ottawa and Gatineau. The weekly Lee Valley Guided Bus Tour on Saturday mornings from 9 am will be back starting June 15th. New this year, three additional ways to tour the Garden Promenade: a 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning Desjardins Guided Walking Tour and a 1:30 pm Sunday afternoon Escape Bicycle Guided Bike Tour starting July 7th; or create your own tour with Hop-On Hop-Off.
Ottawa Garden Days and the Garden Promenade are made possible with the support of many volunteers and garden partners as well as sponsors and partners including Lee Valley Tools, Desjardins, Scotts Miracle-Gro, Bloomex, Acart, Just food, Acti-Sol, Lafleur de la Capitale, Green Thumb Garden centre, Chartwell, Landscape Ontario, GardeningClaendar.ca, Ottawa Tourism, Outaouais Tourism, the Canadian Garden Council and the National Capital Commission.
